Ball Brothers went head-to-head for the third time in their
NBA careers, this time as the
Chicago Bulls defended their home floor against the
Charlotte Hornets. Last year,
LaMelo Ball faced each other on two ocassions, each taking a win on the opposing team's home court.
Zo was playing for the
New Orleans Pelicans during those two meetings, now wearing the Bulls jersey that Hornets owner
Michael Jordan made notorious in the '90s. The
younger Ball brother won the individual matchup, but Charlotte ran out of gas in the 4th quarter as they took their tenth loss of the season.
The game started with
LaMelo driving past his brother and to the hoop, but missing the layup. Melo
failed to score throughout the entire first quarter, contributing with five assists and five rebounds.
P.J. Washington a spark off the bench
punched in the mouth early on, Hornets managed to take the lead to end the first period of play, willed by
P.J. Washington's hot-shooting from beyond the arc. Washington splashed four consecutive triples in the first after coming in off the bench, but
only scored three more points the rest of the game.
Ball on Ball
Despite his team losing,
Melo Dip beat his older brother on the individual statline, getting
another double-double with 18 points and 13 assists. He also had seven rebounds, one steal, one block, and only three turnovers.
Zo shot a much better percentage but got two less points than his little brother. He had eight assists, but
did little else to help his team, only getting one board, one steal, and one block.
Both brothers got into
early foul trouble, and Melo sat out nearly the entire second stanza. During his short stint on the floor in the second,
Melo got blocked by Zo and scored just 3 points to end the half on 1 of 6 shooting.
Bulls went into the half
up 11 points, with an all-around effort from the entire team. LaMelo scored his first two shots
from downtown over his brother to start the third, right after Zo sank a three of his own.
Defense was the issue for Hornets
The fourth quarter started with the Bulls winning by 19 points, their
biggest lead of the game being 23. A Hornets 24-8 run cut the Bulls lead down to four points, but Mr. 4th Quarter
DeMar DeRozan took over to lead the Bulls to victory.
leads the league in two-point attempts, scored 28 on 12 made shots in 20 tries. He's always made a living from 18-feet, but also
added five boards and six dimes to his statline, with one steal.
had a 10-point scoring streak for the Hornets, but an eventual
dagger three by Lonzo Ball would give Chicago the win. Hayward
struggled at first but tended up with 22 points on 8 of 15 shooting from the floor.
Rozier with a game-high 31, Vucevic with 30
Terry Rozier played exceptionally well for Charlotte, scoring 31 points in 37 minutes, going 11 of 17 from the field.
Nikola Vucevic trailed closely with 30 points on 12 of 19 shooting while
sinking all six of his three-point attempts.
Vucevic played 35 minutes and started his night by opening the score with a layup, and
iced the game with a clutch three late in the fourth. He also affected the game by getting 14 boards and five assists.
Bulls are now
14-8, third in the East, and will head to
Madison Square Garden on Tuesday to take on
Julius Randle and the
New York Knicks. Hornets have a
13-10 record, sixth in the Eastern Conference, and will get ready to face defending champions
Giannis Antetokounmpo and the
Milwaukee Bucks (active 7-game win streak) at
